SATA-drive problems

Name: Anonymous 2005-11-04 12:12

Hay guys, I'm having some problems with my new SATA-drive. It worked fine for about a week, but now it seems to freeze the whole computer whenever it's under heavy load (or other random occasions).
I've tried switching the power connector and SATA-cables for new ones, but I still have the same problems. It's a Maxtor Diamondmax 10 300gb 16mb 7200rpm.
Any suggestions on how to fix it?

RMA it =)

Download Maxtor's diag utility from their website, and see what it says about it. If it's just one bad sector, it's not worth worrying about, since the drive can usually deal with that through the defect lists, but otherwise, it's better to RMA it because the drive will eventually crap out on you (and never at a good time, either). The diag program should tell you how sick the drive is.

How do I RMA and what does it involve?

RMA involves telling the vendor that the product is broken and you want a new one.  It also involves, upon the vendors reply, sending it back (some will also send a pick-up for the product).  Some repair it, but most will just send you a new one.
