Allocating the full torrent before downloading might ease your concerns, I've always done it that way. Otherwise, there's not much you can do.
Your browser cache is hardly any different than BitTorrent. Anyway, I've run my harddrives straight for 3 years with BitTorrent on for months of that time with hundreds of gigabytes downloaded, and none of my drives are dead yet.

hard drives are designed for shit like this, assuming you dont get a lame cheap one your probably fine(coughexcelstorcough)
or if you meant how much cache space and stuff does it need besides the size of the file your downloading? not much, something like 50mb.
but, most bittorrent programs are total system whores, it doesnt show your ram as being used up in the task manager, or the cpu as being loaded down. but after a day or so of solid torrenting the system will be slow as fuck

Work on keeping your HD cooler. That's more of a killeron your HD than any amount of BT.
