The Fifth Force

There are four forces in physics: strong, weak, electromagnetic (those two have been combined into electroweak), and gravitation.

When the fifth, fundamental alteration, was first discovered, people were talking about how it would lead to a new golden age of peace and prosperity. It didn't happen. This force could do nearly anything, overpower any other force, even locally change the fine structure constant and violate relativity. Its discovery quickly led to all-out, universal war.

A small group of people plotted their escape from this madness.

They were led by a very compelling, very powerful woman and her servant. This woman, they were promised, would use this newfound force to birth a universe, then swiftly cut it off from the chaos around them, protecting them and their children from the destruction.

Her servant was tasked with making the universe itself, a world with altered gravity and physical elements, a place where the fifth force and positive emotion were closely tied, to protect it from misuse.

But the mistress knew that they, themselves, were the problem. With genetic engineering and careful manipulation, she created new bodies for their new bubble-verse, some bodies with the fifth force integrated into them, but none would be able to hold the devastating implements of war. And, then, she put them all into cold-sleep, and began altering their memories; by that time in human history, much of them were stored in internal, computerized cards.

At this, her servant rebelled. The elimination of memories, she said, was far too much, an ethical violation, a line that should never be crossed. The servant then encrypted her own memories, defying her mistress to take them from her.

Regretfully, the mistress sealed the servant away in one of the world's physical features. It would take upwards of ten centuries to break this encryption, but she, after all, had all the time in the world.

The others, however, were blissfully ignorant of all this. They woke to a peaceful, agrarian world, with a few fantastic monsters thrown in for spice, where they could play and laugh to their heart's content. They remembered nothing of their origins, and the mistress had created a new history for them, and made it real.

This continued until the encryption was finally broken, and the servant, with overwritten memories, released. The newly-freed creature knew that it hated, but was deluded as to the reasons why; as the mistress's new prodigy defeated the servant with the fifth force, the servant returned to her mistress, thoroughly convinced that they were simply big sister and little sister.

Now, only the mistress remembers what war is. Only she remembers what strife looks like, and only she has a concept of poverty, rape, and murder. Only she has memories of the horrors from which they fled.

Only she, Princess Celestia, remembers what it was to be human.

A stable form of primal chaos manifested in her garden one day. She knew what it was at once. Apparently, there was a tiny hole in reality; even she had not considered every single factor when building her paradise.

The lies about its origin came easily, as they always did. The mistress had been a bullshit artist centuries before she became a prancing pony princess.

When the primal chaos was unleashed by the simplest of arguments, she fed it the same untruths she had everyone else, and the primal chaos, knowing nothing, believed her about its own origins. She made it mostly harmless, but it took after her influence: cunning, manipulative, mind-altering.

Fortunately, the reigning thaumaturgical paradigm was able to prevail, but it was a close thing; the princess would not be able to hold it in a stable state for long with local power, not without careful years of subtly rewriting the universe's laws.

She sent a small part of her mind across the universes, discovered who she was looking for, and germinated a seed in a single mind. Her efforts bore fruit; the seed grew, and millions indirectly worshipped her enough for their influence to cross the barrier.

Perhaps these "bronies" would keep the primal chaos at bay long enough for her to patch the hole and neutralize it.

Perhaps.
