Looking for a book by L.E. Modesitt

Trying to find a book* I read back in 05 or so. It was one of L.E. Modesitt's scifi books. I don't recall a lot about the story line but I do know that at the end the mentor to the main character got himself blown up by blowing up a star. Then the main character finds out that he has been chosen by an advanced alien race to do something (That his mentor had been doing before him) and until he completes it he is essentially immortal. They also said that he would not be able to get away by blowing himself up with a star like his mentor had before him.


I seem to recall the main character had implants that allowed him to have heightened reflexes and that normally such implants would active military personnel only however his had not been disabled after he left the military. I may be recalling a different book of his however.
