I read a story online a long time ago, novel length (definitely longer than a short story). It was posted on it's own website, though I don't remember anything about the website.
The start of the story had some people (humans) driving down a highway. There was a lightning storm or something to that effect, and they were transported to an alternate world. The primary inhabitants of the world were anthropomorphic cats, and they were less advanced technologically. This I'm more unsure of: I think there was something about slaves, though I don't remember what species. Most of the story the main character spent trying to improve the technology of the cat people.
I would very much appreciate it if someone knew of this story or a reliable way to find it. I've spent a good while googling it, but haven't found anything.
