Star in hand ??

I need help finding the title of a book. I read a section of it back in high school (late 90's). My memory shadows a title like "Star In Hand" and even some of the content seems similar to the book "hand full of stars".

What I can remember is, it was set in China (I believe) and there was a father and son team. The father was a journalist, from Europe I believe, and the son would take photos for him with a camera hidden in the basket of his bicycle. At some point all hell breaks loose, the two are separated and the boy has to get out of the country on his own. I think he had blond hair as I recall he had to put shoe polish in it to try to appear Chinese.

I really don't recall more than that other than what I had read was very enjoyable. Please let me know if you know of the book I am seeking.
