Syntax of the Novel

Can anyone recommend tutorials or syntax books oriented to the beginner getting into novel writing?

To be specific, something along the lines that would describe the interplay between one's prose and character dialog.

John Gardner's The Art of Fiction and On Becoming a Novelist

It's a comic book, but I would strongly recommend reading Hiroaki Samura's "Blade of the Immortal" series if you'd like to see a good example of interplay between dialog, character, and setting.
