Sooooooo, /book/...

What. The. Fuck.
Really, i dont know why exactly, but why the hell does this book does not have chapters and "quotes" when someone is saying "something or anything, like this"

Why?
i ordered this book a long time ago and started it right there becasue some anon in 7chan's /lit/ told me about this book having a same plot or lesson or theme or story what ever you want to call it about a Dad having a son and have them go against the world.
I loved "The Pursuit of Happyness" so the anon decided to recommend me "The Road"

I have managed to successfully avoid this book and get on with my other books. i read them all and i still have not finished this one.

Now, i just ordered another book from Chris Gardner, "Life Lessons: Where you want are to where you want to be" something like that and i know i will successfully procrastinate on reading this book like i been doing.

i dont know guys.
what is your opinion on this book?
any of you litfags ever had a similar problem like evading a book you had on your hand and saying to yourself "I'll read it when i am done with this one"?

We are. Self-help books are designed to prey on your weaknesses, not aid them. The biggest help you'll find is ditching that shit and just getting on with your life.

OP still here

I know what you all mean, self-help books are more damaging because some point out your weaknesses rather than helping you overcoming them, etc. i read that on an article too.

Dont get me wrong, the book may sound "self-help"ish but frankly i dont believe it is.
A small paragraph on Chris Gardner:
Chris Gardner is a succesful businessman (stocker) that managed to avoid all obstacles that were put on his life and finally managing to achieve his "pursuit of happyness". On the book "The Pursuit of Happyness", Gardner tells the story of himself as how he grew up with a dysfunctional family. He then decided that no matter how things went on his life or how bad his life would be, he would never, ever, abandon his son. Throughtout the book, he goes from homelessness to prosperity. He managed to conceal the fact that he was homeless, study, and ace this In-Job-Training Test so he can become a broker. After becoming a broker, he would actually have enough money to buy him and his son a decent meal and a decent apartment since they would live in "HO"-Tels and church bedrooms.

See, i loved the book. i loved how he managed to achieve all of this. That is why i went and bought his second book. i believe he will go more on detail on his story and he did it.

As i said, i rather buy a novel then a self-help book frankly. But what i do and will buy are novels like "The Pursuit of Happyness". In fact, after i am done with his book, you will be damn sure i will post a thread here asking for similar novels with a similar plot like "The Pursuit of Happyness".
Also i would read the "The Road" if it makes you guys feel happy.
i am not a quitter.
:D

Yeah, the road doesn't have quotation marks for dialogue. It's a more common style than you think. And it happens to be something McCarthy does in all his books.

But I find that it is easy to tell what is dialogue and what is not. He's a good writer.

OP The Road is the opposite from the Pursuit of Happyness.

The Road is a soul-crushing downer.  It's awesome.

He actually said in a interview with Oprah(I think you can find it somewhere on youtube) about that he says he does so it will be easy to read. I never read any of his books so I am not sure if that is true.

I had to read The Road for my English class about the Apocalypse in American Literature and I liked it a lot. I didn't have a problem with the fact that it doesn't use quote marks at all for the dialogue, to be honest there isn't that much of it anyway. There aren't really 'chapters' either, but there are breaks in the text that you could sort of call chapters. The book is a total downer, and I found it for the most part to be pretty intense. I'd totally read it again.
