annoyances

anyone else hate how, when writing dialogue, people often use numerals to express spoken numbers?

for example when telling time people write

"the sun sets at about 8:00 PM"

when i think it should read

"the sun sets at about eight o'clock"

any other literary things that annoy /book/?

I hate when a writer goes too long without indicating who's speaking. Especially when it's not the standard "character 1 speaks, then character 2 speaks", but "character 1 speaks. character 2 speak, and then character 2 speaks again."

Gets confusing real fast.

reminds me of something similar, when a character in the book has a degree or rank of any sort and the narration always refers to the char as "dr. so and so" or "Sgt. this guy"

sort of breaks the narration, makes me feel like i'm reading an information pamphlet.  yes, i know this guy is a scientist or in the army or what have you.  you don't need to introduce him every time you mention him.

can't think of anything else specifically but that sort of stuff annoys me.
