Epic Fantasy

Hey all, I'm looking for an epic fantasy series that has all the staples: wizards, magic, epic adventure, and possibly some dragons and elves

I've been going to the library and randomly selecting a series, only to usually find out that the praise is exaggerated and the fantasy isnt there. I need something with imagination.

So far I've LOVED The Runelords, if you haven;t read it, do so. But I'm on the last book, and I need something new.

Basically, epic fantasy discussion thread

You might enjoy Tad Williams's Memory, Sorrow and Thorn trilogy/quadrilogy [finished], it has most of the things you asked for except for powerful wizards. The pacing is slow throughout the series but the beginning is particularly so; it may be a chore to get through.

Then there's George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series [unfinished] which includes a number of fantasy staples but does interesting things with them. A quality series, but the release schedule has bogged down so you might want to just take note of it and come back to it later.

I believe Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen series [unfinished] fits your bill nicely, but you may find it disappointing that the books lack a clear book-to-book narrative, different books often jump to different settings.

I'm not sure if I should specifically mention R. Scott Bakker's Prince of Nothing series ["finished"]. It is decidedly epic fantasy and it has kick-ass wizards, but adventure isn't what I'd describe it as. Think of medieval crusades and you have the plot of the trilogy. I put finished in quotes because while the trilogy is complete, the overall series is not.

Stephen R. Donaldson's the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever's [as with Bakker, but the Chronicles are more self-contained] world 'the Land' starts off very Tolkienesque but by the second book it becomes a series very worthwhile on its own.

You might want to check out J.V. Jones's Sword of Shadows [unfinished], Paul Kearney's Monarchies of God [finished] and Joe Abercrombie's First Law [finished], but they all veer away from your particulars. You should check them out though, just to see if you'd like them.
