Book burning

Name: Anonymous 2009-08-21 5:42

/book/, I am hosting a small book burning and I have some questions. I've done this once before but the books took more than 12 hours to completely burn because of how dense the are and not a lot of oxygen gets in to burn the books in the center. The audience tends to get bored of the burning after a few hours but the crew has to stick around until all the books are burned out.

Our book burnings are getting very popular recently and this time we have more than 4 times as many books to burn and I don't want to spend two days burning them. So what's the best method to burn masses of books quickly? I have 14 standard sized moving boxes full of books to burn mostly paperbacks but some hardcovers too. Last time we just had people throw books onto the pile and added gas. Would it be more efficient to stack them in some sort of structure?

Name: Anonymous 2009-08-21 5:54

It'd be more efficient to tear the books apart.  Increase the surface area of the material that is to be consumed and you'll speed up the time it takes.  Just break the spines of each book and pull the pages out in sections.

Also, use Farenheit 451 as a firestarter, for poetic benefit, you fucking Nazi.

You might also burn your brassiere while you're at it.

Name: Anonymous 2009-08-21 10:06

Why would you want to burn books? There are very few books I would condemn to being burned.

Well it's for a church but I thought if I mentioned that in the first post, no one would help me. People here aren't very supportive of church activities. Mostly we're burning things like Harry Potter and Richard Dawkins books so it's not like we're burning encyclopedias or anything useful. Just stuff that the church condemns.

It's mostly just symbolic because obviously there are millions of identical copies in print. It's not like we're burning the only copies or the Library of Alexandria where unique scrolls were destroyed forever. This is just so people can come and denounce witchcraft and burn their copy of Harry Potter to show that they're putting it behind them and repenting.

You're trolling, right?

Name: Anonymous 2009-08-21 13:16

Harry Potter is fiction.....Since when does the church condemn having an imagination?

Imagination = independant thought.

You must be new to this whole religion thing.

This is why I like trolls.  I offer these;

"Where they have burned books,
they will end in burning human beings."
Heinrich Heine

"Every burned book enlightens the world."
Ralph Waldo Emerson

"You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police. Yet in their hearts there is unspoken - unspeakable! - fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts! Words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home, all the more powerful because they are forbidden. These terrify them. A little mouse - a little tiny mouse! - of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic."
Winston Churchill

And finally
"...but he who destroys a good book, kills Reason itself, kills the Image of God..."

For books are not absolutely dead things, but... do preserve as in a vial the purest efficacy and extraction of that living intellect that bred them. I know they are as lively, and as vigorously productive, as those fabulous Dragon's teeth; and being sown up and down, may chance to spring up armed men. And yet on the other hand unless warriors be used, as good almost kill a Man a good Book; who kills a man kills a reasonable creature, God's image; but he who destroys a good book, kills Reason itself, kills the Image of God, as it were in the eye. Many a man lives a burden to the Earth; but a good Book is the precious life-blood of a master-spirit, embalmed and treasured up on purpose to a life beyond life.
John Milton

God what a troll... I've never heard of church book burnings... But then again, would I be surprised if they existed?

Stop polluting my air, motherfucker.

Of course it's a troll, but I have to wonder about you too.  Never heard of church book burnings?

Of course you may have meant more contemporary incidents.  If so, then You must not live in the southern US.

And check the rude remarks.  They only serve to make already confused people more angry and intransigent.

I used to work at a Target with a religious guy who would spend his breaks camping out by the Harry Potter books so he could tell people about how wicked they were for promoting witchcraft because the Bible says that witches should be stoned to death. He was dead serious about it. If it was up to people like him books about witches or wizards would be banned.

Harry Potter has no imagination.

Nope, I live in southern CA.

I don't think I've ever even been in a church in my life.

You'd better not be burning The Extended Phenotype.

I'm sure they're only burning ThE gOd DeLuSiOn (a pretty crap book all things considered) so don't worry

Tell us on the doll where the big bad book touched you. The only real reason to burn a book is because it got to the crowd and started independent thought that's why churches used to burn books. Because if you think for yourself then you won't donate money and then they couldn't control you so they burned you at the stake. HERSEY ALL HAIL THE GOD EMPEROR.

With a tender conscience, answer this list of the Ten Commandments:

   1. Have I always loved my Creator with all my heart, mind, soul and strength?    YES or NO
   2. Have I made a god in my own image – a god to suit myself?                            YES or NO
   3. Have I ever used God’s name in vain?                                                               YES or NO
   4. Have I kept the 7th day (Saturday) Sabbath holy?                                              YES or NO
   5. Have I always honored my parents implicitly?                                                    YES or NO
   6. Have I murdered (God also considers hatred as murder)?                                YES or NO
   7. Have I committed adultery? (includes premarital sex and lust)?                        YES or NO
   8. Have I stolen (the value is irrelevant)?                                                                 YES or NO
   9. Have I lied (including fibs & these questions)?                                                    YES or NO

You're not even listening to me. You're just being a pompous egotistical atheist.

We are burning books as a symbolic affirmation of our beliefs. We're not preventing YOU from reading them. We're not banning the books. We are just showing our God that we remain faithful to his commandments such as not partaking in witchcraft or reading books with blasphemy in them.

This is America and we have the Right to do that under the First Amendment just like the Supreme Court says you lefties have the right to burn the flag and symbols of America. It's free speech. You don't have to agree with my beliefs of actions but you do have to recognize my rights.

There are people who would actually say something like this in complete earnest. I know some of them.

Name: Anonymous 2009-08-22 10:14

Burning books is bad for nature (global warming). I just throw my books in the canal at night(*), to let the dead trees go back to nature.

*I only do this with books I'm too embaressed about to put in my garbage bag.

Name: Anonymous 2009-08-22 11:42

I'm a poor garbage man who gets all of his literature and personal possessions from the trash. Why would you do that to me? What if I wanted to read that book?

Name: Anonymous 2009-08-22 13:20

You'll just have to steal it from the library like I did, then.

The last time I looked wanton destruction and the suppression of ideas was inconsistent with Christianity, but if that's your call I'm happy to support your first amendment rights.
Hey! If you can find some blasphemous CD/DVD's the plastic might help fuel the fire...

He's clearly not going to know what the word "wanton" means. He's a conservative Christian.

Pointing out the immense hypocrisy, contradictions, and overall sinfulness of a Christian's actions is as effective as explaining to a dog why it's impolite to sniff crotches.

I don't think I've ever met a Christian other than myself that actually acknowledges that he's a sinner and tries to fix the issue or accept the impossibility of a sinless life.

They just pick and choose what is a the bible REALLY means. "It's not sinful to shave, that part of the Bible is wrong, but don't get me started on faggots."

WWJD, OP.

If your answer is "He would condemn the product of another person and wastefully burn it to show how much he hated it," then you'd be wrong.

Read the Bible, dumbass.

Jesus was a Jew.  You know, people of the book?  Those guys who are always getting in trouble because they focus on study and education, and end up doing well in societies, making others covetous.

Jesus wasn't a Jew. He was a Hebrew from back before Jews were dirty money laundering thieves. Jesus and the Hebrews would slaughter all the Jews if they were alive today.

Sure he was.  His Mother was a Jew, so he was a Jew. And if you're a Christian or a Muslim, then your religion is a Jew spin off.  Don't get me wrong, I think the character was semi fictional, and I don't care much, but be real.  Jews were already dirty money laundering thieves.  Just like everybody else.  But they tend to be better at it than most.  Just like they tend to be better at producing doctors, scientists, and other professionals.  'Cause literacy and education are a major cultural focus for them.
