Looking for contemporary, odder books.

I've spent the last year trying to catch up on what are considered classic reads, but I'm starting to grow tired of the past. I need something NEW that is good. Preferably something that is a little "out-there" in terms of subject matter (that doesn't mean some metaphysical journey rubbish, just a book on a subject matter that isn't used as much). I'm especially interested in documentary-style books, although anything else is good too.

So, any suggestions?

I recommend any of David Markson's five most recent novels.
