I have become somewhat interested in the Victorian era British Empire, after having watched the anime 'Emma' and having over the past year become interested in steampunk. I have been reading Sherlock Holmes, which is great, but I want to find other fiction, from or about the Victorian era. Any suggestions?

It's not the Jane Austen novel, though I do not doubt that it may have inspired the name. No, in the anime 'Victorian Romance: Emma' Emma is a maid who falls in love with the son of a nouveau riche businessman, who is a former charge of her employer, a retired governess. Lots of melodrama, Victorian class drama/conflict, beautiful animation. I highly recommend it.

I love Victorian lit. Charles Dickens' last novel, "Our Mutual Friend" is fun, and darker than most of his work. Thomas Hardy, George Eliot, Joseph Conrad(actually born a pole), are some of the best examples from the era. You almost can't go wrong. Actually, Conrad and H.G. Wells were kind of late, but then Austen was kind of early, pre Victorian. Using the 1837-1901 dates. The non fiction is great and relevant too. Darwin's The Voyage of the HMS Beagle and On the Origin of Species are enjoyed by many. I did the Beagle. I love Victorian lit. Never before, and never since has a single people held such dominion. They warrant study.
