Vampire Hunter D novels

Hi there.  I've never posted on this board before, but being an avid reader I thought I should check it out.  Anyhow I was wondering if anyone here had some thoughts on the Vampire Hunter D novels.  I'm not generally interested by vampire books(I mostly like hard sci-fi and gritty fantasy), but the post-apocalyptic setting seems like it could be cool.  And if a Japanese novel is popular enough to get translated, that means something right?

Well... No, not really. I personally appreciate them for their pulpiness. They're pretty much like B-movies in book format. I'm not sure what it is, either no one in Japan can write worth a damn, the language simply doesn't translate well into English, or all of the translators suck big hairy donkey balls, either way the writing is really bad.

If you can get past that, the concepts and setting are pretty god damn awesome. Also, it's interesting to see where it all started if you like the movies at all.

That's where the translator runs into the problem of doing an accurate translation where everything sounds simplistic or an "interpreted" translation where the writer adds flavor based on the unspoken implications of the language.  Either way, someone won't like it.

Cool, I can appreciate pulpiness.  I was worried about the translation problems though, reviews online brought that up alot.  I am a big fan of Bloodlust the movie though, which is why I was curious about the novels.

translation is fine, and the books are enjoyable
