Where do you buy your books?

Name: Anonymous 2009-05-16 18:59

I typically just go to Barnes and Noble, although I will probably scrounge some used books throughout the summer from a few local places.

Name: Anonymous 2009-05-16 19:11

If it's something older usually I can find a readable copy on Ebay for a buck or two and then just have to pay a few bucks for shipping. If it's something new I still try to find a used copy online but otherwise I usually just get it online which is still cheaper than full retail price usually.

Name: Anonymous 2009-05-16 19:21

I torrent all of my books.

Name: Anonymous 2009-05-16 21:21

If it's impossible to find a download (which it very well is for some of the books I read) I just use Amazon

Name: Anonymous 2009-05-16 21:48

Most libraries have an annual sale.  Many of the books are donated, and many are culled from the collections for various reasons.  By the end of the sale it's usually all you can carry for a buck.

I'm disappointed in you /book/. Only one person who supports his local book shops?

Most of the books I own were bought from local stores. The rest were gifts. Most likely ordered online.

Name: Anonymous 2009-05-16 22:55

I dont really know where any local book shops are around me. I usually just go to borders or barns and nobles. Or I get ebooks from mirc.

Yeah!  There're always good used book shops in most cities of 50k or more.  Look in the phone book.

Name: Anonymous 2009-05-17 16:34

I look for the cheapest option and local book stores are usually not it.

Name: Anonymous 2009-05-19 4:12

Half-Price Books FTW!

Name: Anonymous 2009-05-21 23:57

Chapters, just because it's the closest book store to me.

Name: Anonymous 2009-05-22 1:15

Amazon usually. Locally you can just completely forget about since I read English books (as long as it wasn't originally written in German, obviously), and no one stocks them in linguistically-retarded Germany.

Name: Anonymous 2009-05-22 12:50

I just steal from B&N.  They don't have good cameras and the books don't set off any alarms. Ive done it for years at locations all around the US.  Never been caught once.

i borrow from the library because i like to save money

Name: Anonymous 2009-05-23 16:07

I usually just go to the local Waldenbooks, but I also buy my books from Amazon.

Me too. What methods do you use? Usually if it's a larger book that I can't shove in the front of my shorts I'll use a drawstring bag with some of my books already in it when I walk in. Then later I'll just walk out with one extra book in the bag.

bump

Name: Anonymous 2009-05-25 15:07

I just download all the books I read, although my local library has an annual booksale, and its like a dollar fifty per a huge cardboard box of books.

I have never found a book that I couldn't find for download, and I read some weird books, its all a matter of knowing where to look.

Name: Anonymous 2009-05-25 15:57

Then I guess the books you read aren't weird enough. Tell me when you find anything written by David Markson.

is right. Some of the books I read I could find neither in #bookz nor on bookchan nor on usenet nor on various p2p programs desperation drove me to try despite their inferiority.

Name: Anonymous 2009-05-26 2:27

Others I couldn't find and had to buy: All except one of Samuel Beckett's novels, several Philip Roth novels, some of Cormac McCarthy's earlier novels, even a few by Nabokov and a few by Faulkner. And many of these are very highly regarded works by very famous authors. So yeah, sometimes all you can do is wait until the library's single copy is returned or buy.

Name: Anonymous 2009-05-27 12:29

I don't like that B&N and Borders are mostly filled with paperbacks.

Name: Anonymous 2009-05-29 22:06

Usually Amazon. The prices really aren't bad at all. Sometimes abebooks, or my university library for non-fiction. Occasionally high street retailers, but usually I'm happy to wait a day and save a few pounds.

I couldn't be doing with downloading books. Would much rather have the thing in my hand and not have to read from a screen. An ebook reader might be acceptable but I don't have that kind of money.

I just found Wittgenstein's mistress, on page 54 the last words on the page are "I have now concluded that what I believed to be a person is a shadow." and tbh it doesn't look very good.

IMO, if nobody has uploaded it, then its probobly because its not very good anyway.

you can download cracked ebook readers for free from many warez sites, I personally prefer reading from a computer screen, because I can aim the screen at my head when I'm lying down, and instead of having to hold a book open or risk losing my place, ect. all one has to do is hit a down arrow to continue.

Have any of you ever stolen books from your college libraries?

Have you guys ever stolen books from your college libraries?

Name: Anonymous 2009-06-04 11:29

Not from a college library but I did keep "Unix For Dummies" from the city library. They forgot about it a few years later and offered me another card when I popped in to use the internet there.
I hate libraries anyway, if I read a good book I want to own a copy of it so I can read it again

The local used book store around me has some awesome stuff from the 70's on back, but they're so damn expensive because at this point, they're antiques.

Sucks because those are pretty much the only books I'd be interested in buying from them.

Name: Anonymous 2009-06-11 23:11

Where I buy books usually depends on what I'm looking for.  If I want something that's come out recently, I'll usually go to Chapters or Coles (or Golden Age Collectibles, in Vancouver, if I'm looking for comics).  If I'm looking for an out of print book, I'll go to one of the myriad used book stores in my area.

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-08 15:36

I use www.bookdepository.com since they ship worldwide for free, and have fuck tons of stuff in stock. Cheaper than the local book stores here, or any of the large chains.

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-08 17:16

I don't buy books. I don't see the point if I've got a fantastic library system in my county.

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-08 21:50

There are six public libraries within walking distance of my apartment. And if they don't have the book I want, I just go to one of the smaller ones and put in a request. Then they either get it from another library or buy it, then I have the book I want in a few weeks for free.

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-08 23:21

I used to buy retail then found out about Book Depository, sooooo much cheaper.

Hey! Great, you're fucking library hippies!  Fuck off!  The topic is "Where do you BUY your books?"  Not where do you borrow them.  We know about libraries.  You're not fucking specialpointing them out.  Shut the fuck up!

I love libraries too but I can't help but buy books, I love owning my own copy. I have a massive library in my apartment (entire wall of living room is BOOKS). It lets me re-read stuff or share it with others.

On top of that, authors/publishers are one of the hardest hit "industries" lately and libraries don't exactly support them financially.
