R.R. Martin - Ice & Fire.

Sup /book/. This is my first time here, so I wouldn't know whether or not you can hold a fairly decent discussion in here, or if this board, like almost all other 4chan boards, is just a means of holding a shitstorm. Hell, let's give it a shot.

So I just started reading the first book in R.R. Martin's Ice & Fire series after a ton of people recommended it to me.

I don't know how many pages I've read, as I use an electronic dictionary to read it.

Is it just me, or is the book total shit? Does he really expect us to remember 500 names of people and places that are given such a poor introduction and are often introduced far too fast?

I thought I was about to read a fantasy book, but it seems I am really reading a trivia of how well you can remember useless and uninteresting information. I wonder if there's a question sheet in the back to confirm my suspicions.

Eh? I'm saying that full and accurate judgements of books can be made purely on a basis established by your examination of a given book's exterior. Why would anyone shoot anyone down for that, Red Baron?

because it is complete bullshit? cover art is usually created without the artists full knowledge of the book. troll.

um only shitty authors allow that to happen retard actually good authors choose covers themselves

That's it, my new book will have a simple gradient effect done on a Mac

I'm not talking about the specific cover art chosen, dumbshit.

Anyway, it's clear that you don't spend a lot of time around books you personally dislike, or you would already be familiar with this.

then what the hell ARE you talking about, crapface?

if reading a book is like watching a movie, then reading the synopsis is like watching a trailer and looking at the cover is like looking at a movie poster. in most cases it is more like looking at a POLISH movie poster.

while i can not free myself of judging movies by the posters, at least i admit that this has often lead me wrong.

Sure, you can be a moron if you like. Just don't expect other people to take you seriously when you do it.

I'm talking about knowing what a book is like from its exterior, as a gestalt. If you can't do this, you know nothing about books. Full stop.

With that said, I'm reading this series, and it's exactly like I knew it would be.

>as a gestalt
spar mir die fremdwörter, junge. especially if it makes no sense.

the exterior: weight, measures, texture, smell, cover art, read marks

none of these except the cover art give you any kind of indication about the text.
troll.

Like I said, you don't know much about books. You can argue all you want, but you'd learn more if you started paying attention.

and you would look less like a douchebag if you started making sense instead of spouting vague bullshit. you have not convinced one person of your point yet, if there even is a point.

but please, tell us more of this magical aura that books have to tell librarians of their merit. seems like youve stumbled across some sort of new-age RFID concept there. you should make a business of it.

It's like you honestly believe publishers don't suit the outsides of books to their insides.

Name: Anonymous 2009-04-12 15:05

Sometimes they don't.  Sometimes they fuck up.

I have to say this is my favourite fantasy series, the only other fantasy I've enjoyed as an adult being tolkien. But; I kind of agree with the OP, or I know I did on my first read at least. It didn't detract that much from the reading experience though, and I stopped caring about trying to remember minor character/namedroppings halfway through A Game of Thrones.

If it does bother you alot it could be a problem though, since the heraldry gets mroe intricate and the minor houses get more of these minor character further into the series. But as I said, keeping track of all characters wasn't necessary for me to enjoy the books.

It does add alot to rereading the books though, since Martin's intricate plot-lines and foreshadowing of characters and events several books before the events happen can give you new mind-fuck moments on a reread.

This is obviously fanboy-biased, but meh, so what?
