Kafka on the Shore or The Wind-up Bird Chronicle?

Have you read anything else by Haruki Murakami? If not the I recommend you start with Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. Otherwise go with The Wind-up Bird Chronicle.

I read Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World and thought it sucked. Couldn't find out what all the fuss was about.

Kafka on the Shore so you won't be disappointed by it after reading TWUBC

Both are good, but reading TWUBC first sets your standards really high.

I read Wind-Up Bird first, then went through and devoured his other stuff.

Really though Hard-Boiled Wonderland would be a good place to start.

Or Norwegian Wood, if you really can't get into the magical realism style easily. It sets you up for it.

I read Kafka first and really liked it, then read Wind Up Bird. I'm not really sure which one I liked better of the two, however.

My first Murakami book was Sputnik Sweetheart and I freakin loved it.

My first was Wind-Up Bird Chronicles, and now I own all of his current books out.

What I really like is his short-story work though.  Plus the 4 book series: Hear the Wind Sing, Pinball 1973, A Wild Sheep and ending with Dance Dance Dance.
