I really liked Paul Auster's New York Trilogy.
George Simenon - The Maigret Novels. Maigret in New York is a good one.
Leo Malet - The Nestor Burma Novels. I read The Rats of Montsouris.
Jerome Charyn - The Isaac Quadrilogy.
Dashielle Hammett - The Maltese Falcon.
Raymond Chandler - The Big Sleep
Jean Claude Izzo - The Marseilles Trilogy
Michael Chabon - The Final Solution
Jonathan Latimer - The Lady in the Morgue
Jim Thompson - Pop. 1280. Bertrand Tavernier adapted it into the awesome French film Coup de Torchon.
James Lee Burke - The Dave Robicheaux Novels. Check out In the Electric Mist with Confederate Dead. They recently made a movie based on it with Tommy Lee Jones. Bertrand Tavernier directed it.
And it can't be a detective list without Agatha Christie's Poirot.
And if you're into hardboiled stuff, check out anything published under the Hard Case Crime imprint.
