Are the actual James Bond novels any good? I've always loved the movies, and was curious if the books are worth a read.

If you really loved the movies, then yeah, your taste is probably kitsch enough to enjoy the novels as well.
The bond in the books is way more cunning and smart. In the movies you get the impression he barely spends any time at all in office arranging and planning before the mission

The books have halfway decent story, but shit writing. Fleming had no poetic skill.

Flemings a'right.
Readable enough although often quite dry, but his Bond is a man of a different world than Broccoli's interpretation.
See them as seperate entities, don't expect the atmosphere and thrill of the fliks, but look at who Bond really is and they may enhance the films for you, especially the two most recent portrayals by Craig.
On a side note, never EVAH read Ludlums 'Bourne'!!!
They're awful!
The plot devices are just coincidence, the characters are nowhere near consistant with themselves, and the padding of tech-specs make them painful to read, ineptly mirroring Fleming at his worst.
Fucking dreadful.
