First Paragraphs

Post some fuckin' first paragraphs. Prologues don't count, single sentences don't count.

The trains that enter London arrive like ships sailing across the roofs. They pass between towers jutting into the sky like long-necked sea beasts and the great gas-cylinders wallowing in dirty scrub like whales. In the depths below are lines of small shops and obscure franchises, cafés with peeling paint and businesses tucked into the arches over which the trains pass. The colorsand curves of graffiti mark every wall. Top-floor windows pass by so close that passengers can peer inside, into small bare offices and store cupboards. They can make out the contours of trade calendars and pin-ups on the walls.

First I was like, "LIKE LIKE LIKE." Then I was like, "Oh, now it's metaphors which shall drown me." Then I was like, "What's colorsand?" Then I realized it was supposed to be "colors and", and my opinion of this paragraph improved slightly. Anyway, no compelling case for the marine analogy is being made. In what way are these trains like sailing ships? Especially in what way are the towers like "long-necked sea beasts" (plesiosaurs?), and the gas-cylinders (whatever those are) cetacean? They aren't particularly unlike these things, but can we pick and choose here? Surely there's a metaphor that's actually... apt. And whatever comparison is used in the first sentences needs to infuse the following as well.

Other than that, it's pretty neat.
Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta.
I have that and the following few paragraphs memorized, they're so great. I don't think I need to give the source.
