1984 - Toe Touching Scene

Name: Anonymous 2008-05-15 19:32

I've always wondered about the scene near the beginning of 1984 where Winston manages to touch his toes for the first time in years with the woman's help. Is it Orwell's way of showing the positive effects of a society where you are never free from peer pressure? What was the point of including it?
