the book has some elements of metafiction in that the writer/narrator at times will intentionally draw attention to a narrative device (esp. wrt cliches), or otherwise intrude on the story, which annoyed me. on the whole, though, realistic fiction providing insight into the horrors of modern-day afghanistan, both before and during taleban rule. not an especially happy book.
