During the fleeting moments before The Pain, Kumiko Wataya had been learning to play the violin. The moments before The Pain were very brief, barely fourteen years long, and nothing compared to the six months that followed. Maybe she had been good at playing the violin. Certainly people had told her she was good at it. In fact, she liked to think she was good at it.
But Kumiko could not believe that now. She knew that people lied. It was because that was what people were made of. Lies, swimming through people's bodies like slithery albino eels with pink, blind eyes. There was no violin anymore. It belonged to another time, another universe, a better, forgiving place in which The Pain had never happened.
Kumiko no longer belonger to that place. The Pain owned her now, and the violin was a memory fading into a dream.

During the fleeting moments before The Pain, there was a summer, gloriously hot and pierced through and through with unrelenting sunlight. Everyone went swimming in the sea. It was the only way to survive the day. Anyone who stayed inside and tried to watch television would be dryer than a mummy before noon.
There was a beach on the north side of the island, under a high cliff of sheer rock that looked like a huge capsizing ship, a sinking, stone Titanic built for people who were twenty feet tall. You could catch some shade if you spread your towels underneath it, and drinks kept in the water there out of the sun's way stayed cool all day.
That summer, her best friend was Yuki Kano. She and Kumiko both went to the beach ever day, but Yuki didn't swim much. There was a boy she liked to talk to a lot, which was hard to do in the deep water, so she would often stay in the shade or only wade into the ocean until the water was up to her knees. Later cynism would make Kumiko think that she was also making sure there was no sea to get in the way of the boy's eyes when he looked at Yuki's figure. But in those long-gone times, she did not think that way.

During the fleeting moments before The Pain, Kumiko swam. There was an island, no more than a sharp crag that happened to poke through into the air. Its surface was sharpened into an intricate network of sharp ridges and small dents, making it impossible to climb with bare feet, and you would stand a good chance of ripping up your swimsuit or even your skin if you tried.
But it was a good target for swimming, if you set out from the beach, because it gave you something to aim at. Kumiko didn't like to swim out into the open sea. After a while, she would lose all concept of distance, because the horizon in front of her never came any closer or farther no matter how long she swam, and if she looked back, the land would be far enough away so that swimming back also didn't make her feel she was getting any closer. It was as if she were suspended in place, allowed only the illusion that her struggles against the waters were actually propelling her forward, while in reality, everything around her slid away from her at exactly the same speed she could manage to swim, always staying just as far away as it had been before.
The little island had no name that Kumiko knew of. It was so unimportant that nobody ever mentioned it when it was out of sight, so it didn't need a name. If you had to talk about it, you called it “the island” and pointed with your hand. If it couldn't be pointed out by hand, there was no reason to bring it up.
