How is this series? I lost cable recently, so I've gone over reading some old books I have, and one of them happened to be 'Running with the Demon', which I really really am enjoying. I looked it up on wiki, and its part of a prequel series to this guys' whole fantasy universe. So I was wondering, if I loved this book, is the rest of this series worth checking out?
I read the first couple of books when I was in my teens, until it struck me that Brooks was a hack working a Shannara formula, and he was just stringing me along. What book is he up to now, the "Used Tampon of Shannara"? "Lo, hastily did the Orcs flee over field and tarn, in fear from the sanguine, dripping mass."
Sheesh.
There are much better books on the shelf. (Stuff like Kurt Vonnegut rescued me from Brooks Hell in my teens.)
However, despite my vitriol, you can read the first one in the series for yourself and decide if his writing and milieu can carry you along for a while. The book can stand by itself. I believe it was illustrated by the Bros. Hildebrandt, and at least those were fairly excellent.

The first one is very good. I read the first few pages of the first book after that and I really didn't even enjoy it. It might take some time for you to get rolling on it, but once you do, you'll enjoy it, or at least you should.

I first read the Shannara books when I was 13 or so. I enjoyed them.

Hey hey, you see what I mean? Perhaps I should call things like the Shannara series "teenager fantasy fiction". Tolkien is still worth reading, in my 40s; not so with Brooks.
