So, I saw an old english copy of Les Miserables on my bookshelf and was thinking of reading it some time. Is it any good?

no, absolutely and totally terrible. but then again I've thought that about every Victor Hugo I've ever read, so I may be a bit biased

The original is a horrid read. It's stuffed to the gills with random interludes of thinly-veiled political commentary and secondary characters you don't care about.
However, If you can find an abridged version that focuses main on Jean Valjean's story, then I'd highly recommend it.

Hey, imagine if the musical was anything like the original book. In the middle of each song they'd diverge into ten-minute long sewer descriptions, or hour long tangents about the battle of Waterloo.

Focus on Jean Valjean? Fuck off.. The great thing about it is all the minor characters.
