/r/ing the name of a book

I'm looking for a book, it was a dragon book, but it wasn't fantasy, it was scifi. It was set on a planet that had dragons on them, and humanity had traveled to the planet, and trained the dragons to fight. the actual story was about a boy who trained a red dragon, but it was mute. (not anything from the pern series)

I read this book a long time ago and I also searched for it for years.  I tried all of the usual things, searched for strings like "Dragons" and "training" and "Red dragon" and NOT "pern" on google but I only found pages about video games or D&D games with 1D20, etc.  Well about a month ago I was at my little sister's girl scout book fair and I was idly browsing the titles when I wandered into the "For Boys" section.  Although it was choked with nonsense titles like Harry Potter and Lemmony Snicker, I was also able to find a lot of old classics from my childhood such as the (redone versions of) Lord of the Rings, The C.S. Lewis Chronicles series, and some of the old Bruce Coville books I had enjoyed when I was really young.  And then suddenly I saw it.  The same book you are describing.  I was in ecstacies and immediately bought it even though it was a crappy modern version with an CGI cover and advertisements for Arthur on the inside leaf.  Anyway, I don't want to keep you in suspense forever.  The title of the book, surprisingly, is "Mein Kampf."  I just thought you'd want to hear how difficult it was for me to figure it out so you can see how much time I saved you.  You're welcome.
