The whole "knave" deal was localizing the whole thing into something that's a little easier to understand in English.

Originally, kisama (貴様) was used as a very polite and formal second person pronoun used towards those of higher social standing, but it eventually evolved into the derogatory sense it has today. I couldn't really think of a good English equivalent that worked well, so I picked "knave".

Also, Takeru also talks about how if you break up the kanji in kisama into ki (貴, the honorable suffix; think "aniki" 兄貴) and sama (様, the honorific), they're both polite terms on their own. That's where the whole "villain" and "churl" deal comes from.

Finally, the whole Shakespeare thing came from trying to make all of it fit with the "knave" thing, because the Edo period and the Early Modern era don't quite jibe with it.

Come to think of it, I should probably attach some translator's notes to a future patch, so those who are curious can see how fun it is to translate Takeru's terrible puns.
