Sorry for the delay

They had not eaten since yesterday. Having learned from experience that there was no telling when they would get their next meal, they had divided their bread into two parts: one to eat, one to save. Then they would break off a bit of the saved part, a little while later another bit, and soon it would be gone. Later they would ask: -Has anyone got any bread? I'll give half a cigarette for it.
-I had some yesterday, but I've eaten it.
They had turned off the road into the forest in the evening and were still pushing forward, ignorant of where they were being led and for what purpose.
-Let's shift loads.
-I carried it longer than last time.
-Christ, I'll be damned if I'll go on carrying the thing!
-Stop grousing all the time! Hand over the tripod, I'll take it.
The speaker was Lehto.
A spruce branch sprang back into someone's face.
-Holy Christ, can't you be more careful, you pisshead?
-You watch your goddamn tongue!
-Think I'm going to take shit from you?
The battle of words never led to a fight or even to bad feelings; with the disappearance of the exhaustion and nervous tension which was its cause, the quarrel was forgotten as though it never occured.
No one thought of cursing Koskela, for he was never without a burden. While the others spelled each other, he handed back one piece of equipment only to take another man's burden, helping each of the machine-gun crews in turn. Some men objected to letting him carry them, but they did not persist in their refusal for they were actually grateful for his help. Lehto did not want to appear in a worse light, so he too carried continuously.
