i've grown up in shounen mangas and they have a different vibe to what is considered 'shounen' nowadays. i do think nowadays the tag 'shounen' is greatly misused.

Exactly, it's purely a marketing term, and the age range of "shounen" goes from 11 - 20. WSJ is aimed at 11 - 16 year olds, where as magazines like Champion RED and Shounen Ace are aimed at ages 18 - 20+. Some magazines allow gore, nudity and sex, some don't. It's all up to the publisher.
