I took a chance and started to read a few pages and now Im on chapter 21.

Why does the main character always have to have a redeeming quality?
People aren't like this in real life.
For me the story is quite interesting, especially peoples motivations.

They dont but even in Silence of the Lambs I somewhat like Hannibal Lecter even for being who he is, but Shamo I couldn't give a fuck about. Like when he cripples that guy (and rapes his girlfriend before that) there is no reason. He did not disrespect him since he was not good enough to win as he was so why take offense?

I suppose you could say Hanibal lecter is a classy killer, killing with a kind of poetic flair.
But Shamo is a departure from that. His acts of violence are often unplanned and reactionary. And he often gets backed into a corner.
I think that this is the role he is supposed to play, a despicable person. At the point I am at, I want to see how his character progresses. I mean considering his background, he either has the potential to fail miserably like his coked up prostitute girlfriend or somehow win in the martial arts world?
I think I'm really hooked on this tightrope between how hard he can rise or fall.
