Identifying an anime

We watched this AMV Hell thing at school, and there was an anime I thought looked like Evangelion (I hadn't seen Evangelion beforehand).  There was a tall whitish-gray spire structure.  I think it was a girl and a boy near the top.  The boy was at least part robot, he was hanging off and got shot or exploded somehow and fell as the girl reached for him.

I don't know if I'll enjoy it, but I'd appreciate if you could help me figure out what it was.

Go here: http://amvhell.com/ Click AMV Hell at the top. Find the one you watched. Watch the video again and try and recognise the song playing during the clip or near the clip and then you can figure out what anime it's from.
