1) Now and Then, Here and There - Hands down one of the best. An anime about a world that needed a hero, and a boy that became that hero...but at a heavy cost. One of my favorite anime titles
2) Heavy Metal L-Gaim - Mamoru Nagano's first anime, (Five Star Stories fans should recognize a lot of things here) with Yoshiyuki Tomino of Gundam fame, an amazing saga of a rebellious war against the shadowy and omnipotent Poseidal
3) El Hazard: The Magnificent World - great OVA series with fantasy and drama mixed in
4) Fantastic Children - awesome series about a group of supernatural children and their search for a way home
5) Rahxephon - the anti-Evangelion. Great mecha series with a stellar cast and plot
6) Samurai Champloo - Watanabe's smash hit, mixing Japanese samurai cinema with contemporary pop culture references
7) Eureka Seven - GONZO's breakthrough mecha series with a lot of themes relating to music and the 1970's
8) Wings of Honneamise - a surreal movie about a young aspiring pilot in a cynical future
9) Paranoia Agent, Perfect Blue, Millenium Actress - all 3 are great works by Satoshi Kon, I HIGHLY recommend to watch all of them
10) Grave of the Fireflies - probably one of the strongest anti-war pieces of Japanese anime
11) Fancy Lala - one of the last and best of the old-school style mahou shoujo series.
12) Hunter x Hunter - Yoshihiro Togashi's revolutionary shounen series about four young men that eventually become "Hunters", a group of extraordinary people with amazing talents that seek to accomplish their dreams, and the many characters, locations, and fights that they go through
13) Ramune 40 Fire - probably one of the best yuusha series in the 1990's
14) Brave Fighter of Legend Da Garn - one of the earliest yuusha series that broke and redefined many of the typical conventions found in Super Robot anime, great plot twists and characters
15) Martian Successor Nadesico - one of the best mecha series in the post-Eva period. Great commentary on mecha series and on otaku
16) Saikano - Really angsty series about a guy and his biologically-enhanced girlfriend
17) Battle Programmer Shirase - a hilarious action series about a loser hacker named Shirase, with a notorious reputation for his skills
18) Ninku - very entertaining series about a world that has just suffered war and the former soldiers that are faced with the outbreak of another war. Oh, yeah it has ninjas, and after looking at it, you'll really start to question Naruto since it was written in 1995, 3 years before Naruto...
19) Jin-roh (The Wolf Brigade) - Really good look at an alternate Japan
