I have to agree with you on that one, there is a defference when it comes to nerd and otaku.
in my mind nerd is someone that knows a lot about a number of things (ie. Computers, technology, video games, codes, and other thing along those lines)
Otaku on the other hand only takes joy in reading, drawing, watching, writing, and listening to anything that has to do with anime, and nothing else.
I am a nerd, with a little otaku mixed in, but I don't spend all my time with anime, but I do, when i have the time like to draw, and watch anime.
I am also very picky about the kinds of anime I watch, where Otaku's are not.
I hope this has help to clear some of the misunderstanding that people have when it comes to nerd vs otaku.

I only work and anime related things when i have the time, there has even been weeks where I have gone without anime, but I dont go nuts because I dont have it.

Once theres some awesome anime out there(I love Hayao Miyazaki!!)
But as time passed by, most animes now are bullcrap. NO offense but I really mean it.
Most of the animes now just contain "cute" girls without any creativity and plot. I am not their target group so..
And my impressions of those who crave on these kind of animes are really bad.
I dont really hate people who watch anime. But some of them are really addicted to the virtual world.

Otaku is related to Anime and Manga due to its popularity within the community in which the word came from, there spawning to the Americas. However a Otaku is ANY person obsessing over ANYTHING to an extent that you dont get out of the house/socialize. I personally HATE Manga and mostly all Japanese animation, however I would self proclaim myself Otaku.

Actually, a weeaboo is just somebody who wants to be Japanese so bad that they'll immerse themselves in the culture and forsake all of the their native culture.
For case examples:
/a/ is full of "otaku" in the American sense of the word.
/jp/ is full of weeaboo.
