I have never really watched much anime. I thought I'd watch Naruto for the first time to see what the big deal was. In my opinion it was okay, nothing special. The episode involved the 3 characters getting in some torunament, and then Naruto's guy friend fighting this scrawny dude and then this turtle was his dad and kicked the scrawny kids ass. Some of you might know it.
Anyways, recommend me some anime that doesn't suck. Or let me know if that was just a terrible episode.

Ergo Proxy seems good, but Anonymous would probably know better.
You might want to watch Full Metal Alchemist, that one is generaly a good pick. Or anything by Ghibli, like Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro and whatnot.

It's not that it was a bad episode, it's just that naruto is a poor, poor excuse for anime.
I don't recommend code geass, either.
I definitely agree with >>4 watch some studio ghibli movies, and full metal alchemist is worth a try. It really depends on what kind of genres interest you.
Samurai champloo is a good series, nice art, aimed at an older audience than kiddie stuff like naruto. A little more realistic than many other anime series.
The melancholy of haruhi suzumiya is great, beloved by many peoples :) I think it's a good example of what anime's all about, and i don't think i've heard anyone say they've watched and didn't like it.
Mushishi is good, unless you're the type that demands a lot of action, killing etc. It's very studio ghibli-ish.

However, Haruhi Suzumiya is aimed towards anime-enlighened people, so it might not be as good for a starter anime.

One Piece is pretty good for a mainstream anime. Decent fighting scenes, interesting characters... it's easy to swallow for a newbie I guess. Has lot's of colour and adventure aspects, but has the odd bit of violence and swearing to help you feel more secure about watching it.
But for the love of god, make sure it's a subbed version you watch.
And yes, Studio Ghibli is brilliant. However, Hiyao Miyazaki's work always seem's quite heavily influenced by the west (porco rosso for example, where they eat cooked fish. COOKED!) and so lack's a lot of key anime aspects. It's not your typical anime, but watch them anyway.

Always start with EVA because it will change your life forever and everything else is mediocre at best in comparison.

Can't go wrong with Full Metal Alchemist. I just started reading today and it seems decent. It's not exactly hard to follow so I don't see why it wouldn't be a good manga/anime for a newbie to start with.
I also might start watching Dragon Ball Z. It's hard to believe I've some how not all these years... Anyway, is it a classic case of a shit mainstream anime, or is it's success actually justified?
bleach is a pretty good anime, its quite deep but u gota stick with it. the style is awsome

One Piece. Get through the first three arcs and it's great. It's worth passing though those generic opening arcs for the glory that is the remainder.

Gargoyle of the Yoshinagas.
The series was a pleasant surprise, for me.
