i think the director is Fukusaka... anywho, if you have not had the chance to watch it, then i highly recommend it.

I enjoyed the book. But I liked the manga even better. The lighthouse scene was so :'( I read the Manga before I bought and read the novel. Never seen the films. Would like to see both even though everyone hates the sequel.
