Where to start

I want to get into anime, but I don't know where to start. What should I be watching?

If you want giant robots beating the shit out of each other, watch Neon Genesis: Evangelion or Gundam SEED.

If you want action (but not of the giant robot variety), watch Ninja Scroll or Hellsing.

If you want comedy, watch School Rumble or Great Teacher Onizuka.
