How does cell aborb androids?

How does cell absorb the powers of the androids. They are robots.
Even if the androids are created from biological materials their mecha forms contain the true power.

Androids 17 & 18 were real people, then Dr Gero got them somehow and gave them some robotic-parts and most especially the perpetual energy generators, which gives them unlimited energy.

Cell was a being that was created by the cells of the Z-fighters and he was implanted with all of there fighting information. All he was lacking was power. To get the power, he needed 17 and 18's perpetual energy generators.
