Strong+intelligent protagonists

There seems to be two types of protagonists that writers go for. There's the kind that sucks hard, but wins anyway. The point being the character flaws make the character accessible to the viewer, and humanizes them.(examples: Shinji(NGE), Ranma, Gene Starwind(Outlaw star))

The other type is where they're actually smart and strong and stuff, like Kenshin, Hilda(outlaw star, I'll never forgive those fuckers for killing her off in ep. 4), Teacher Onizuka(at times at least).

Anyway, I'm tired of pussy stupid heroes. Anyone have suggestions for anime with great, intelligent heroes?

Well, IMHO Ranma is an excellent martial artist. However, I do agree that he does not fit the uber-protagonist archetype. If you want someone like that, I recommend watching Neon Genesis Evangelion if you haven't already. Shinji is a legend among men.
