Why are japanese obsessed with making things of smaller size and more efficient then something of bigger size?

I am big yankee american I can only imagine it is because japan live on small island with more people then australia so they have to accomodate such lifestyles.

I drive big SUV in big america, and every day I eat big meal at Mac Donalds. My butt is very big too from sitting all day eating Mac Donalds and watching MTV and football.

How is life in japan compared to big america?
