Dark anime

such as Boogiepop Phantom, Texhnolyze, Serial Experiments Lain, Angel's Egg, Jin-Roh, Cat Soup, Saikano, Kite, Paranoia Agent, Gunslinger Girl, Stepmother's Sin, Berserk, Hellsing, Gantz.

A large issue with many 'dark' anime is that they deviate in between an average action, harem, then children's (Elfen Lied, Eva.) It's really disquieting.

I don't mind action sequences or normal plotpoints, but with Elfen Lied in particular these aspects took rein and removed the direction of the 'dark art' style and often the plot itself. I don't really care if it is good, so long as I'm respected as a viewer and it remains somewhat consistent in its purpose.

Thanks very much for any ideas.

Since it's an OVA I'll give it a try if I can find it, but all the torrents are seedless. Thanks a lot.

I said 'kind of.' Manga is intrinsically bad, this must be recognized.

Unlike with anime, there is no fallback from writing. You have only poorly drawn black and white images and the writing. You fall back on the writing if anything. The problem?

The writing is by 25 year old Japanese artists. I am not saying that a manga can never be done well because artists cannot write, but ... It's somewhat naive to expect a quality author in a Japanese graphic artist. This is not even expected from people who major in English for 10 years. Asia itself has never produced a single book that has attracted any historical attention, ever.

There are exceptions, like Berserk, but on the whole manga is garbage. As I said, the problem lies not in the fault of the creators, but the fact that you ask them for something that they can't create: literature. Know any dark, textless manga?
