The Manga/CG look

2D drawings have much more detail as they focus on one moment in time.  Since anime relies on motion, it uses simpler, cleaner frames that allow smooth movement, but without the ultra detailed shading or lines of a manga or CG image.  How does an anime capture that feel?  Are there any examples?  The manga imitation in FLCL is an obvious example, but what about something more practical?
