Gantz

Name: HowiePoof !HG6fkGXhas 2004-12-24 7:35

I read all of whats out the other day and I like it. I was surprised by the range of emotions captured by the story and fell in love with the characters. What does everybody else think about it?

Name: Mag !1r4nmzgoJE 2004-12-24 7:59

It's probably my favourite manga at the moment, along with 20th Century Boys. I really think the quality lies in the scenario and premise more than the characters, though - I'm usually pretty tolerant of characters and Gantz has a lot of people that I want to stab until they die. (lol katou)
That said, I think they're getting more likeable now, even if we aren't getting much development on some of them. I'm like, the only Tae fan I know, though.

a cool series, but the fastest read ever. i wait months and catch up on the chapters i've missed in 15 minutes.

Name: Pierson 2004-12-24 16:57

I got a torrrent of all 185 chapters and cleared them in about two hours. Awesome series but by God it's slow. I'm just going to wait until 300 is released and then read them in batches to avoid watching a single chapter cover about five minutes of action/talking/heavy breathing.

Name: The(no)One 2004-12-24 17:12

Characters there have shortest life span EVER. Too bad, I actually liked some of them.

Damn, anyone else wants Sadako back?

Name: Anonymous 2004-12-24 17:49

Not as much as Dog. :(

Name: Anonymous 2004-12-24 18:09

DOG DIED? That sucks.

Name: Pierson 2004-12-24 19:12

We're not sure. It's assumed so, since he never appears in anything past the Buddha mission.

And plus now we have that damned Panda.

Name: Anonymous 2004-12-24 22:16

Is is me or was that a Lara Croft lookalike in the crazy buddha mission?

Name: Anonymous 2004-12-24 22:43

Lara Craft was in the buddha mission. I miss the dog, he was a perv, but he was cute. I'm glad they didn't show his death if he did die. Hoi Hoi is no substitute... besides, he's on Izumi's side =P

Well I like where they are going now that ch185 is out... Oh the posibilites!

GANTZ is garbage. Anything by Hiroya Oku is, by default, utter shit. Shitty art, shitty story, shitty pacing.

Shitty art? Are you blind?

'S true about the pacing though. How long did it take the anime to catch up the last manga arc it included? :(

Name: Anonymous 2004-12-26 14:20

>>16 art styles are subjective

shitty vs great.. its ur opinion

but objectively, gantz anime vs gantz manga... the anime is weaker(but that is usually the case)

No, I've probably just read a lot more manga than you. It's not the worst art but it's far from good. About the only interesting thing in his more recent manga is the background CG, and even that is used to poor effect.

Frankly, the only claim to fame Oku ever had were those blur lines on some shaking tits in his debut manga. That's it.

But my biggest pet peeve is like >>16 mentioned. Needing one chapter to watch some whiny idiot run around a couple corners is bad. Horribly bad. In fact, the worst I've ever seen.

If you don't believe me, go visit manganews.net and randomly start reading series. Once you get to a few dozen (or a couple hundred) series, you'll see what GANTZ for what it is: total and utter tripe.

Whoops. Two references to >>16. I fail it.

but the dog rapes the chick!@

I like Gantz, but it is disapointing at times. It is no where near as good as say Berserk or Hellsing. The CG backgrounds are intersting, but also sometimes look rushed. The artist's obession with huge tits is almost getting annoying and immature. Those chapter breaks are kinda fun, but also getting kinda cliche and bland. Then again the cute as hell and rather flat (and all too young looking) Tae is quite the exception.

Sometimes the sex and gore seems excessive, but usually I think it's rather well paced and realistic. Well, as realistic as you get in a world like this. Hell, this kinda reminds me of a reality series, but.. you know.. without the suck and a whole lot of freaky sci fi action.

As for the story pace itself, yeah, sometimes he does drag it out. Then again this is typical of many weekly manga.

Oh and the dog molests the chick, not rapes her.

Name: Random Anonymous Fucktard !ErY2TknG0w 2004-12-26 22:19 (sage)

Naruto already is a bad exaple of dragging, and GANTZ vastly trumps Naruto. I'd be curious if anyone can think of a worse example than GANTZ for nothing happening both story- and chapter-wise.

Honest question too. If there is anything worse I'd read it solely out of morbid fascination.

ever heard of rumiko takahashi? ;)

Name: Random Anonymous Fucktard 2004-12-27 5:44

If I recall things actually happened in her chapters. But she sure could drag on a series for an insane number of volumes... --

Name: Jabu 2004-12-27 10:52

The thing about GANTZ is that it's awesome to read when you can go through a dozen volumes at once. Preferably free of charge. If you have to read it one chapter at a time, it'll seem horribly slow-moving.

But the story itself is fantastic, the art is great and the entertainment value is through the roof. If it wasn't a weekly manga, it'd be one of the best I've read.

Name: theblakeman 2004-12-30 0:35

Personally I find that the pacing in GANTZ is just fine- it has gotten slower recently but the point of the story is to not progress quickly, it's meant to be a mystery as to what GANTZ is and what it does. In 185 it is picking up again with the story, but I think what makes the manga great is the characters, they are far more interesting than a lot of manga characters I have seen.

Name: Anonymous 2004-12-31 18:32

GANTZ is great because the story is like a mishmash of a 13 year old boy's random daydreams, ninjas, bewbies, dinosaurs, and vampires, all in the same story, and it somehow works (well if you don't think to hard about it).  The only problem is the dragonball Z pacing in certain places.

Name: Anonymous 2005-01-01 1:22

The violence and sex add to the realism. You can't go on alien hunts with hot chicks and not have sex and violence.

Name: Anonymous 2005-01-02 1:48

I lost my link to latest gantz relases.  Anybody have the page?  I think blacksphereintheroom linked to it?

Name: Anonymous 2005-01-03 10:11

Lol. And it adds MATURITY! The manga is instantly more mature when it has sex and violence in it!
