Personally, my favorite animes are the ones that know they're a TV show ant nothing more. Extra points if they parody a specific genre, and are impersonal to their own story. I don't really have a favorite though.

Golden Boy(english dub) and the first Tenchi Muyo! series. Golden Boy for Doug Smith who made the anime far better than the japanese dub(a rare thing), and Tenchi Muyo! because it was the first anime I saw.

Ahh Golden Boy dub is a classic. Although I normally don't enjoy ridiculously (or even mildly) perverted series, I find Golden Boy hilarious.

that toilet scene in ep1, the facial expressions he makes... lol

it lead to alot of the same, but it was one of the first to pull it off in a pretty polished way(UY was doing the same sort of stuff since the 80s)

goldenboy = classic lecherously-japanese lol (or just a funny えっち show)

Ranma 1/2 is still by far my favorite.

And I honestly have watched as much anime as humanly possible over the last 14 years, but have yet to find a series I've liked more, but Tenchi Muyo (OAV's ONLY), have come in a close 2nd.

Dubbed VHS copies of Iria was probably my first real anime series. I saw the second VHS, not knowing that there was one before it and after it. I thought "Goodness! This sure ends with quite the cliff hanger.. and it seems that I am missing something before it as well..."

I finally found out that there are things like series and I learned to totally love Iria.
